Cleveland area man faces trial for rape

Tribune Chronicle

WARREN — A Cleveland area man who is a registered sex offender in Ohio is scheduled to stand trial Aug. 14 on five felony charges linked to a reported sexual assault of a young girl in Newton Falls.

Craig Gillette, 28, who was last living in Bedford, waived his right to a speedy trial Monday before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Peter J. Kontos. Gillette is being held in the Trumbull County Jail on $200,000 bond.

Gillette was indicted secretly in May 2016 on two counts of rape and three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Prosecutors allege the offenses began in the fall of 2012, when the girl was 12, and continued through October 2013. If convicted, Gillette faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Gillette was labeled a Tier 2 sex offender from a December 2008 conviction on an unlawful sexual conduct charge in Cuyahoga County, court records show. The sex offender status requires him to register his address with the sheriff in his county of residence every six months for 25 years.
