WHAT: Township trustee meeting Monday

PRESENT: Ted Webb, Mike Hovis and Frank Parke

Trustees:

• Were informed by the Trumbull County Engineer’s office about a company receiving a permit for hauling overweight equipment that will be on Hoagland-Blackstub Road, North Road and Larchmont Avenue;

• Reported a letter was sent to residents on the southside of Northview Drive about water drainage issues;

• Approved a mutual aid agreement with other law enforcement agencies to provide and receive assistance when needed;

• Approved sale of a 1999 Chevy van from the police tow yard not to exceed $2,500;

• Announced cemetery cleanup is all of March. Anything left on graves will be removed;

• Recognized Bill Gardner for 30 years of service on the Zoning Appeals Board;

• Heard from residents concerned with a number of special needs homes being planned in township. Residents said Niles and Tallmadge also have been addressing the issue and passing legislation on limiting the number;

• Will begin taping trustee meetings starting March 13 for airing on YouTube similar to what Cortland does with its council meetings;

• Approved Phillip Pelley as a firefighter/ EMT;

• Transferred $10,000 to the park account for maintenance needs.

Champion

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: David Mahan, Kelly Boyle, John Pitts, Roger Samuelson and Jim Scher

The board:

• Approved the high school marching band’s field trip Nov. 14 to 19 to Walt Disney World in Orlando for pefforming in the Disney parade. Transportation will be by charter bus. Cost of $630 per student wil be paid by band fundraising;

• Approved six high school speech and debate team members to compete March 3 and 4 at the speech and debate state tournaments in Olmstead Falls;

• Approved the curriculum ”School as a Teaching Tool” as part of the school’s application for the LEED Silver ranking for energy efficiency on the PK-8 School to be constructed off Route 45, south of the high school;

• Announced the Senior Citizens’ Advisory Council’s seventh annual Swing into Spring dinner/ theater and awards program will be 5 p.m. March 30 at the high school;

• Presented the 2017 ”Business-School Partnership Award” to B-Inspired Yoga, which provided a yoga program to elementary students;

• Reported Champion Middle School receiveda $3,000 donation from Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley for educational enrichment for sending students 10 students to educational camp;

• Reported the district received educational enrichment grants for chromebooks, a 3-D printer and an outdoor greenhouse at the high school for teachers Rebecca Baxter, Vickie Harrah and Jessica Hrubik.

Lordstown

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Monday

PRESENT: William Catlin, Tracie Allen, Roberta Hiller and Niki Reid

ABSENT: Ron Tyndall

The board:

• Reported the Lordstown Energy Center has committed to funding two $1,0000 renewable scholarships for high school class of 2017 graduates planning to study math, science and engineering. The district also received $28,284 from Bill Siderwicz, president of Clean Energy Future LLC, for new spring varsity sports uniforms;

• Approved agreements with Eastern Gateway Community College, Kent State University and Youngstown State University for College Credit-Plus courses for high school students;

•l Heard from Cheri Pyles, tech teacher at elementary, who discussed a 3D printing workshop she and four other Lordstown teachers attended. The class is designed to prepare teachers to integrate coding and 3D printing into curriculum;

• Approved interdistrict open enrollment for the 2017-18 school year with applications due April 30;

• Heard from three alumni who have participated in the alumni speaker series. The series focuses on sophomores in personal finance and features alumni sharing the paths they have taken to their careers, including training and college. The school hosted three sessions on business, finance and non-profit management;

• Recommended to the county budget commission approved millage of 35.6 mills, which is the second lowest of all school districts in Trumbull County;

• Approved complimentary passes and waiving payment of any entry fee for full and part-time district employees, residents ages 65 and older, personnel assigned to work games and board members to attend athletic events.
