Father indicted in death of baby

WARREN — Matthew Lee Wilson was indicted Friday on charges of murder, felonious assault and endangering children for the death of his 5-week-old daughter earlier this month.

The Trumbull County grand jury handed up the indictment in a special report, court records show.

Wilson, 32, 1017 Bellair Court, Niles, pleaded not guilty and was given a $1 million bond by Judge W. Wyatt Mckay. Defense Attorney Matthew Pentz asked McKay to consider reducing assistant county prosecutor Diane Barber’s $1 million bond recommendation to $100,000.

Pentz argued the bond should be reduced because Wilson does not have a prior criminal history and has supportive family in the community, but McKay was not swayed. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled March 8.

Wilson is accused of causing significant injuries to his daughter, Aubrianna Wilson, on Feb. 10. The infant was taken to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron on Feb. 11, and was diagnosed with brain bleeds and rib fractures. The injuries, from which she later died, triggered investigations by Niles police, Trumbull County Children Services and the prosecutor’s office.

The Niles police and fire department and Lane Ambulance responded on Feb. 10 to 1017 Bellair Court on a medical call for what was reported as a baby with a heart condition. Police officers were told Feb. 11 by a hospital staff member that the girl may have been abused and her injuries could have been caused by the baby being shaken or squeezed, according to the call log.

Charles Wilson, Matthew’s father, told WKBN-27, the Tribune Chronicle’s news partner, that his son tripped on a toy while holding the baby and accidentally fell on top of her.

Aubrianna I. Wilson died Feb. 15 at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.

The autopsy is not expected to be ready until June, according to the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
