Man arrested in East Market Speedway robbery

WARREN — A Warren man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to an aggravated robbery charge in connection to an early Saturday robbery at the Speedway gas station on East Market Street.

Eric C. Hinkle, 36, Rosegarden Drive, appeared before Warren Municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak for arraignment. Ivanchak set bond at $50,000 and scheduled another court date Monday. Court records show that Hinkle will be represented by a public defender.

Police accused Hinkle of robbing the Speedway early Saturday after reports said a man in a gray hooded sweatshirt got away with about $175 in cash.

A clerk told police a man went to the back to the store just before 3 a.m. to pour himself a soft drink, then walked up to the counter with his hand inside a pocket of his hoodie and demanded the clerk give him money, according to a police report.

When the clerk paused, the police report states, the man told him to hurry because he was not playing. The clerk handed him some money, and the man left. The clerk then hit a panic alarm and called 911, the report states.

The clerk told police he thought he saw the man heading toward the east side of the building toward North Road.

While police officers were questioning the clerk, another officer brought a man in as a possible suspect for identification. The report states the man was found in the 1700 block of Youngstown Road with a woman who was arrested on an unrelated crime.

The clerk identified him “without hesitation” as the robber, the report said.

Police also reviewed the store security video of the robbery to further identify the man, the report states.

An assistant manager for Speedway determined the amount of cash taken to be $175.
