Area MLK Jr. Day events:

Van Nelson directs the TCIMA Choir at a service celebrating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday at New Jerusalem Fellowship Church in Warren.

There are several tributes and events planned in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. They include:

• A Martin Luther King Jr. seminar will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Jerusalem Fellowship, 2555 Palmyra Road SW, Warren. Presenters will be the Rev. Marcia L. Dinkins, MVOC executive director, who will speak on ”Social Justice in the Aftermath of the Election” and the Rev. Orneil Heller, pastor of First Baptist Church of Braceville, who will speak on “The Struggle Continues.”

• The YWCA Warren, in collaboration with the Trumbull County MLK Jr Dream Team,” will host a community forum ”Building Bridges in Community Leadership” at noon at the YWCA. The forum will provide an opportunity for young adult community leaders to voice concerns, ideas and questions about the African American community in Warren and beyond. Representatives of black organizations such as NAACP, Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League, Trumbull County A.P.R.I. Trumbull County Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance – TCIMA, Trumbull County African American Achievers Association, The Warren Civic League, and others. Discussion will be facilitated by Rev. Todd Johnson, pastor of the Second Baptist Church.

• The Rev. Martin Luther King Planning Committee of Mahoning County will hold a community workshop 8:30 a.m. to noon at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown. The theme is “Remembering What is Civil and Doing What is Right: An Examination of Institutionalized Racism.” Local community activists will address issues of institutionalized racism and King’s challenge to fight for justice, civility and what is right. Discussion will include education, entrepreneurship, criminal justice reform, and concerns of the Valley’s youth. Attendees will participate in roundtable discussions on initiatives for community collaboration and coordination.
