Man cops fired at facing $150K bond

WARREN — A Houston man Vienna police fired at as he fled a police stop following a hit-skip is being held on $150,000 bond on more than 10 charges filed in Warren and Girard municipal courts.

Jason B. Utley, 43, is facing charges of  felonious assault, failure to comply with the order or signal of a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, driving under an OVI suspension, failing to stop after an accident and reckless operation of a vehicle, according to Warren and Girard municipal court records. He is scheduled to appear Wednesday in Girard Municipal Court and Thursday in Warren Municipal Court.

Utley has been in the Trumbull County Jail since Tuesday after he was treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital following the Nov. 18 two-crash incident.

Utley was not hit when Vienna police officer Thomas Barone fired his gun over Utley’s silver Mercedes Benz.

The first crash happened in Howland when Utley was driving east in the left lane on East Market Street when he crossed over into the right lane, hitting a Toyota Camry, according to the Ohio Highway State Patrol.

A witness followed the vehicle into Vienna Township on Warren Sharon Road, the report states.

A Vienna police officer stopped Utley’s vehicle, but he fled, nearly running over the officer, according to a police report.

The officer shot at the car and Utley’s vehicle crashed into a ditch in the area of Warren Sharon Road and Centennial Drive.

Utley’s blood-alcohol level and drug tests, which were  taken at the hospital, indicates he had a 0.378 blood-alcohol content, the police report states.

The legal limit for driving in Ohio is 0.08.

The officer was treated for minor injuries and was placed on sick leave.
