Former official wants record to be expunged

WARREN — The ex-director of Trumbull County’s Department of Job and Family Services, convicted in 2009 on a charge of cocaine possession, wants the conviction erased.

Thomas Mahoney, who now lives in Bluffton, S.C., is scheduled for an expungement hearing 9 a.m. Thursday before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Ron Rice.

Mahoney, 63, had the chance to not have a felony criminal record through an intervention in lieu of conviction program when he pleaded guilty to the charge in August 2009, but he failed two drug tests, which resulted in a sentence of four years probation. If Mahoney had completed the program, the charge would have been dismissed, but he was charged with a probation violation after the drug screens proved positive.

A motion filed by Mahoney’s attorney, Robert Shaker, states Mahoney is eligible for expungement because has no criminal proceedings pending, he has been rehabilitated and sealing the record of the charge and conviction is consistent with the public interest.

Mahoney admitted on tapes in June 2009 to buying cocaine from a former JFS employee who later co-operated with authorities. The employee gave police recordings of phone conversations he had with Mahoney, which resulted in Mahoney’s firing in March of the same year.
