Carols, cocoa ring in season at Stambaugh

The Dana School of Music will present its annual holiday music extravaganza, “Carols & Cocoa” and the Dana Holiday Concert, on Wednesday at Stambaugh Auditorium.

“Carols & Cocoa” opens the evening at 7 p.m. in Stambaugh’s Ballroom, featuring seasonal favorites performed by the Dana Trombone Ensemble, the Dana Clarinet Ensemble, the Dana Early Music Ensemble, the Dana Flute Ensemble, University Chorus, Dana Chorale and guest group the Stambaugh Chorus. The program culminates in a holiday sing-along.

Dana School of Music students bring cookies to share, and complimentary cocoa will be available.

After a brief intermission, guests are invited upstairs to the Concert Hall, where the Dana Holiday Concert will feature J.S. Bach’s “Magnificat” and other holiday favorites.

The concert will feature the Dana Brass Quintet, YSU Jazz Ensemble and Dana Symphony Orchestra along with Poland Seminary High School Women’s Chorus (directed by YSU alumnus Nick Olesko) and the Conneaut High School Show Choir (directed by YSU alumna Megan Mullins.

Organist Kathy Davison Miller will provide an organ postlude on Stambaugh’s E.M. Skinner pipe organ.

According to Randall Goldberg, director of the Dana School of Music, “Almost 40 years ago, a new tradition began as the Dana School of Music hosted a modest sing-along in the Bliss Hall lobby. It is now an outstanding musical evening consisting of the easygoing Carols and Cocoa segment, and the more formal Holiday Concert. Stambaugh Auditorium is a beautiful venue for these performances, allowing our students to perform in a world class concert hall. We are proud that the community supports the Dana School of Music in such a public way.”

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults, $5 for non-YSU students and senior citizens and free for children 12 and younger and YSU faculty, staff and students with a valid YSU ID. Tickets are available at the Stambaugh box office, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown; online at www.stambaughauditorium.com and by calling 330-259-0555.

YSU’s student internet radio station, Rookery Radio, will rebroadcast the concert at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 11, 7 p.m. Dec. 24 and throughout the day on Dec. 25.  To hear this concert rebroadcast, go to www.rookeryradio.com and click on the link under “Listen Now.”
