Woman struck and killed near Boardman mall

BOARDMAN — A woman died after she was struck Tuesday morning by a pickup truck in the parking lot of the Southern Park Mall.

Police did not release the victim’s name but said she was in her mid-60s.

She was leaving the JCPenney on the north side of the mall when she was struck, police said. She was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where she later died, according to Tribune Chronicle news partner WKBN 27 News.

The investigation is continuing, and no charges had yet been filed Tuesday. Mall officials declined to comment.

Also, Boardman police are searching for a homicide case witness who police said crashed his car Tuesday morning on West Boulevard and ran from U.S. marshals.

Police said Raymond Ortiz, 21, failed to appear as a witness in a Mahoning County murder case, and his car was being followed by marshals on West Boulevard. After Ortiz noticed that he was being followed, a chase started and Ortiz crashed his car near West Boulevard Elementary School, according to police.

School officials told WKBN they did not go on lockdown but kept the students inside for recess.

Those with information on Ortiz’s whereabouts should call the U.S. marshals tipline at 1-866-4WANTED.
