Library receives early learning grant
WARREN — The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library is among 10 in Ohio picked to participate in a pilot program to prepare young kids for kindergarten.
The library will receive $49,480 from the Ohio Early Learning Challenge grant program to implement the program aimed at families with children younger than 6 who may not already be engaged in community support programs.
Cheryl Bush, public relations manager for the library, said plans are to have four community events through March that focus on early literacy development and readying kids for kindergarten. The first will be Friday at Warren’s Downtown Christmas on the Square in partnership with Trumbull Family Fitness.
“We will be providing information and making parents aware of the services available to them in the community,” Bush said.
The remaining three events are being coordinated.
Lori Foust, youth services manager at the library, coordinated the effort to get the grant. There are 10 other local community partners, educational services and faith-based organizations involved.
“Participants in family focus groups made it clear that libraries strive to make families of all backgrounds and economic levels feel comfortable and they provide high-quality resources to support parents in their role as their child’s first teacher. We knew libraries had to be a key component of this pilot in order for it to be successful,” said Angel Rhodes, early childhood education and development officer with Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s office.
The libraries picked are ready to take action by working in partnership with other community organizations to provide families the knowledge and resources they need to support young children and get them ready for school, Rhodes said.
