County voters defeat Cardinal schools levy

MIDDLEFIELD — Voters in a small portion of Trumbull County who are part of Cardinal Local Schools defeated a 4.5-mill levy that went down by just eight votes.

The levy passed in Geauga County by a slim five-vote margin, 2,253 to 2,248, but it didn’t fare as well in Trumbull County, where 17 of the 21 people who voted cast “no” votes, according to numbers from the elections board in both counties.

About 40 registered Trumbull County voters live in the part of the precinct that is Cardinal schools but only about half of them are active voters. The bulk of the district is in Geauga County.

Had it passed, the levy would have been the first new money for the district since 1992 and would have raised approximately $1.3 million annually. District officials said the levy will be put on the ballot again in May.
