Cruze again tops Valley sales charts

LORDSTOWN – Despite an overall drop in year-over-year sales of new and used vehicles last month, the locally made Chevrolet Cruze maintained its position at the top of the charts.

The Lordstown-built Cruze held onto second place for new vehicle sales and first place for used sales, according to numbers released Friday by the Greater Cleveland Automobile Dealers Association.

In Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties last month, there were 117 new Cruzes sold compared to 107 in September 2015.

The Cruze’s year-to-date sales showed improvement over last year’s with 1,281 new units of the popular small car sold as of the end of last month, up from 1,151 by Sept. 30, 2015.

There were 101 deliveries of used Cruzes in September versus 59 last year. Sales of used Cruzes also improved year-to-date, with 859 the first nine months of 2016 over 671 in the same period last year.

In August, 174 new and 162 used Cruzes were sold across the Valley, respectively.

Meanwhile, overall sales of new and used cars and trucks combined were down in the tri-county area from 5,123 in September 2015 to 4,484 last month.

There were 5,063 sales of new and used vehicles in August.

Total year-to-date new and used sales were also down from 43,202 at the end of September 2015 to 40,511 at the end of last month.

In August, there were 35,990 sales of new and used vehicles.

Mahoning Valley saw its sales of new vehicles fall from 3,018 in September 2015 to 2,535 last month.

There were 2,806 sales of new vehicles in August.

Year to date, new vehicle deliveries slid from 24,094 last year to 22,448 this year, as of Sept. 30.

For new vehicles, four of the top five models were Chevrolets, led by the Silverado, with 200 deliveries, down from 204; the Cruze; the Equinox with 105, down from 245; and the Malibu, with 102, down from 117. The Ford F150 pickup placed fifth with 100, down from 138.

Overall, across the Valley there were 1,884 used vehicles sold in September, compared with 2,035 last year. In August, there were 2,193.

Year to date, 17,245 used vehicles were sold by the end of last month, compared with 18,342 at the end of September 2015. In August, there were 15,357.
