Suspect is indicted in murder case

WARREN – A city man was charged with murder Wednesday in connection with last week’s killing of a man at a home on the city’s northwest side.

A Trumbull County grand jury, in a special report, indicted Gregory Brewer, 49, of 2300 Plaza Ave. N.E., on charges of aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery and tampering with evidence. He is being held in Trumbull County Jail and scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Friday before Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan.

Brewer is accused of killing 55-year-old Dominic “Dino” Bufano.

Warren police took Brewer into custody around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest. They did not say what led them to Brewer.

Bufano, 55, died at his 1341 Bingham Ave. N.W. home last Thursday. Police have not said how he died, only that he suffered puncture wounds. His body was found in the basement of the home he shared with his 85-year-old mother, Donatina Bufano, the property owner.

Donatina Bufano said she was upstairs in the Cape Cod-style house about 7:30 p.m. when she heard a struggle in the basement. She can be heard on a 911 recording telling a Warren police dispatcher that her son yelled upstairs to her that he was bleeding and told her to call the police.

Later, when she yelled down to her son, he didn’t answer.

She told the dispatcher that someone had come into the home through the outside cellar door to the downstairs area where her son stayed.

Initially, police said it was possible Bufano’s death was linked to a home invasion. However, there didn’t appear to be any forced entry, indicating he may have known who attacked him.

Although an autopsy to determine Bufano’s cause of death was completed on Friday, the Trumbull County Coroner’s Office hasn’t yet released any information about the case. The case was assigned to an outside coroner because Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk has been out of town.

Police have not said whether they recovered a murder weapon.

Bufano’s death marks the city’s fifth homicide of 2014.
