Footballs fill air again in Valley

Football season is always an exciting time of the year, and the high school games on Thursday night did not disappoint.

In the headlining game of the night, Girard rallied back with 4.5 seconds left on the clock to defeat Niles, 14-7. Both of the Indians’ touchdowns were scored in the second half.

Making his return to the football field was Mineral Ridge coach Jeff Whittaker, but unfortunately for him, his team fell short, falling to Salem 28-7.

Other winners on the night include Poland, Western Reserve and Struthers.

The first Friday night of the high school football season kicks off tonight with some great area matchups. The most highly anticipated game is the now-annual season opener between Warren G. Harding and Austintown Fitch. Last year, the Falcons handled the Raiders, 48-0.

Also facing off in a Week 1 rematch is Brookfield and Springfield. The Warriors rallied in the second half last year to win, 21-19. The game this year is in New Middletown.

Other games to be played tonight include Lakeview at Hubbard, Kenmore travelling to Howland, and John F. Kennedy making the trip to South Range. In all, there are 19 local games on tap for tonight.
