Austintown board expands drug testing
AUSTINTOWN – The Austintown Board of Education plans to expand its current drug testing program beyond students involved in sports.
In a work session Tuesday prior to its monthly meeting, the board discussed including students enrolled in all extracurricular activities as well as those who have purchased parking permits in the random drug testing policy already in place for student athletes.
Superintendent Vincent Colaluca said he and the board are “excited to move into a direction that provides support for parents and students” and called the new policy a “proactive” approach.
Currently, 10 students a week who are involved in sports are randomly selected to be drug screened, he said. With the new policy, the number of students being tested as well as the nature of their involvement in after-school activities will change.
The board will meet within the next few weeks to try to determine what number would provide a good, random sample of students, he said.
Valley Care Heath System of Ohio currently performs the drug screenings and randomly determines which students will be tested each week.
