ASECU to close 2 branches
WARREN – The Associated School Employees Credit Union will close two branches next month, due in part to a reduction in walk-in traffic likely triggered by more online banking.
Branches at 3991 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Champion, and 10827 Mahoning Ave., North Jackson, will permanently close Aug. 29, according to credit union President and CEO Michael Kurish.
“There was a time that every payday, people would bring their payroll check into the their financial institution to cash and deposit,” Kurish said Thursday.
Today, however, he estimates that more than 75 percent of credit union customers use direct deposit, with large numbers also preferring to conduct their financial business electronically, online or at automatic teller machines.
Kurish said the building that houses the Champion office is much larger than needed. The North Jackson office also was chosen for closure to eliminate duplication of services at other nearby offices, he said.
Ten full-time employees are being affected by the closures, Kurish said. Five will be relocated into other offices and five are being laid off.
Both buildings are owned by the credit union and likely will be put on the market for sale, he said.
The credit union plans to maintain existing offices in Austintown, Newton Falls, Lordstown, Boardman and at Youngstown State University.
