Report: Sharon coach stabs parent at Brookfield track

BROOKFIELD – A Sharon, Pa., track coach was arrested after a stabbing Tuesday afternoon at the track area of the Brookfield Local Schools complex.

Police Chief Dan Faustino said officers dispatched at 4:30 p.m. found coach George D. Thomas, 53, of Sharon, Pa., holding a knife, and Otis Hickson, 47, a parent of a Sharon student, bleeding from the chest and holding a brick.

Both men were disarmed and Thomas was taken into custody, the chief said. Hickson was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. His condition was not released Wednesday night.

The stabbing stemmed from an incident a short time earlier when two Sharon High School students said they were threatened and assaulted by Thomas. Witnesses said that Thomas is a track coach and Hickson is the parent of one of two students.

Sharon teams practice at the complex through an agreement with Brookfield. No students or staff from Brookfield were involved, according to police.

Details of exactly what ignited the first conflict were not given. Witnesses said the second altercation happened after the parent went to talk to the coach about the first.

Thomas is being held in the Trumbull County Jail on charges of felonious assault and conveyance of a deadly weapon into a school safety zone, both felonies. Misdemeanor charges of assault and aggravated menacing are also being filed against Thomas.
