WARREN – A 36-year-old mother of four, whose husband was killed breaking into a Niles house last summer, was sentenced to four years behind bars Tuesday for her involvement in the conspiracy.
”I lost my husband and my best friend. I’ll pay for this the rest of my life,” said a tearful Nichole Allen of Mineral Ridge, the last of four co-defendants to be sentenced in the deadly burglary in which a homeowner sent a shotgun blast through his front door after he heard them trying to break into his home.
The blast killed Allen’s husband, Terry, 37, who was with two other men.
The trio was dropped off on Niles Cortland by Nichole Allen and another woman. The men planned to steal copper out of houses to sell as scrap.
Another man, Scott Crislip, 18, of Niles, was sentenced to six years last week after pleading guilty to the same charges as Nichole Allen.
Last month, Michael Burns, 34, was sentenced to 11 years behind bars for his role as one of the men who tried to break into the homes. Burns suffered a wound to his upper right arm from the same blast that killed Allen.
A jury convicted Burns of the attempted aggravated burglary and the first-degree felony version of involuntary manslaughter. The jury discarded an option of finding Burns guilty of murder, which could have meant a life sentence with parole eligibility after 15 years.
Mindy Sierra, 32, of Niles, one of two women who dropped off the three men and planned to pick them up after the break-in, was sentenced to two years in prison last month.
Assistant county prosecutor Chris Becker said the men were trying to steal copper pipe and fittings to scrap so they could get money to go to the county fair.
They tried to break into another vacant house that had already been looted, then were met with the shotgun blast at the home of Roy Hahn, 41. Hahn was cleared by authorities after an investigation by the Trumbull County Prosecutor.
Allen was wearing latex gloves and found with a crowbar in his hand.
Mrs. Allen’s attorney, Ryan Ingram, said family members have taken custody of the couple’s four children.
