Band moves senior night

WARREN – After their last game of the season was canceled due to the threat of violence, 29 Warren G. Harding High School Band seniors will instead be recognized during the winter band concert.

Other Harding seniors – including football players and cheerleaders – already were recognized a couple of games prior to the Nov. 1 cancellation of the Lorain-Harding game.

The concert will take place 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the high school cafetorium and begin with a performance by the Concert 2 Ensemble. The band seniors will then be recognized, and the concert will conclude with performances by the Concert 1 Ensemble and Symphonic Band.

Harding band director Reid Young met with the 29 band seniors about how they would like to make up the missed senior night.

“They all agreed that (the winter band concert) would be a good night. It’s indoors. We always get a great turnout for that,” Notar said.

Warren Schools Superintendent Michael Notar said the decision was made to cancel the Nov. 1 game after consultation with school and police officials after he received a call from police stating a “high level of concern” surrounding the game.

“The Lorain-Harding football game was canceled because I was informed there was evidence of a credible threat from adults toward adults. When the police chief says there is evidence of a credible threat, there is no choice, but the choice of caution because children were present,” Notar said following the cancellation.

The cancellation followed two weeks of violence and rumored threats of retaliation that started with the Oct. 19 shooting death of Taemarr Walker, 24, of Warren, in a confrontation with police while he was on his way to ”shoot up” a bar, according to police reports. Walker’s brother, Tashawn Walker, 26, is accused of shooting to death Richard Rollison IV, 24, at a West Market Street, Warren, gas station one week later.

Tashawn Walker pleaded not guilty Thursday during his arraignment and is being held at the Trumbull County Jail in lieu of a $3 million bond.
