Niles board gets new member
NILES – The Niles Board of Education named Lori Hudzik to fill a vacancy on the board.
The board voted 4-0 on Monday to select Hudzik from six candidates who sought the position.
She replaces board member Eric Lanham, who resigned in February, citing work responsibilities.
Board President Tony Perrone said Hudzik is a lifelong community member, small-business owner, Niles graduate and parent with children who have been and are part of the school district. Board members believed she will bring a ”diverse variety of skills and interest in education and the future of the school district,” he said.
Perrone said all the candidates were very qualified. ”We were fortunate to have a fine group of candidates who applied,” he said.
Hudzik will fill the remainder of the first half of Lanham’s four-year term through December. If she chooses to serve for a full four-year term, she would need to run as a candidate in the November general election.
In another matter, the board approved early release days for Monday and March 28 at Niles McKinley High School to allow staff to move items into the newly built high school, which will be open April 9, following spring break.
Perrone said the teachers have been moving items for several months with this to be the final move. The new building will be open for the remainder of the school year.
He said the two new elementary schools will be opened in August for the 2013-14 school year.
In other action, the board:
l Approved Safeco Environmental Inc. at $314,779 for asbestos abatement for the old high school and Jackson and Washington elementary schools through the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission. Walk-throughs of the buildings for the public will be held prior to any work;
l Approved Basinger Auction Service for the auction of salvageable items from the interior of three schools. Perrone said the auction will be handled online;
l Reported the teachers will take part in a districtwide safety training April 8. Students will receive a waiver day and students will have school;
l Approved the high school band’s field trip to the Cleveland Indians baseball game on May 17.
