NILES – A one-car traffic crash Sunday afternoon caused lengthy power outages in parts of the city.
The vehicle involved in the accident on Warren Avenue, just west of downtown, hit a utility pole, shearing it in half and bringing down power and cable lines.
It happened about 2:30 p.m. Crews were still working on restoring power at 10 p.m.
According to the fire department, the female driver was able to get out of the vehicle before it caught fire. The driver was examined by paramedics and refused further treatment, according to the department.
The crash is under investigation. Additional details about it were not available Sunday.
Tribune Chronicle newspartner WYTV 33 reported the crash is what police think caused traffic backups on U.S. Route 422 in the area of the Eastwood Mall to North Road. Police from Warren, Howland and the Ohio State Highway Patrol helped direct traffic at the intersections affected by the power outage.
Also, most of the businesses in the area closed due to the outage.
