Wed. 9:45 p.m.: Officials concerned Trump proposal will cut grant funding

WARREN – Trumbull County officials are opposing a proposed cut to the federal budget that would eliminate a grant program that has provided the county with over $10 million for projects and is expected to provide at least nearly $4 million more in the next few years.

Eliminating the Community Development Block Grant program will “completely defund the primary source of infrastructure funding available to Trumbull County residents that help to offset the debt burden for low-income and mostly elderly households who will be asked to pay for mandated infrastructure improvements if all of the federal funding proposed for elimination goes away,” said Julie Green, grants manager for Trumbull County.

The federal budget proposal released by President Donald Trump proposes eliminating the program, among others, for 2020 spending, but the move would have to be approved by Congress.

Trump’s budget promised a 5 percent defense budget increase to $750 billion next year, while cutting day-to-day operating budgets for domestic agencies by $62 billion, or 10 percent.
