Mon. 6:25 p.m.: Border Wall could take funds from local military bases

WASHINGTON – The 20-page list of military construction projects that might be cut to pay for President Donald Trump’s wall along the Mexican border contains millions of dollars for projects planned in Trumbull County.

Affected could be the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, which is due $8.8 million to relocate the main gate for increased station security, and Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center near Newton Falls, which could lose $7.4 million for a new machine gun range.

The Pentagon today delivered the list to lawmakers wanting to know which projects might be affected.

U.S. Rep. Timothy J. Ryan, D-Howland, fired back, saying Trump’s “fake national emergency” is now jeopardizing “critical military projects” in Ohio.

“This is unacceptable. Not only is the president undermining Congress and the Constitution, his actions make America and our servicemembers less secure and less prepared to deal with threats at home and abroad. We should be ensuring our servicemembers have the resources they need to do their job – taking already appropriated funding does the opposite,ã Ryan said in a release late Monday afternoon.

About $112 million would be sucked from projects in Ohio.

The others, according to Ryan’s office, are Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, $6.8 million for a fire / crash rescue station and $61 million for the National Air and Space Intelligence Center campus at the base; $13 million for a new fire station at Mansfield Lahm Air National Guard Base; and $15 million for a new alert hangar at the Toledo Express Airport.
