Mon. 11:46 a.m.: Warren firefighters injured at Monday morning fire

WARREN — Two firefighters were injured while battling a fire early this morning at 230 Vermont Ave. NW.

Fire Lt. Shawn Peura fell through a floor and had burns on his leg and Capt, Ed Hukari injured his back, according to fire reports. Although emergency medical technicians were called to the scene, the firefighters did not seek medical attention, the report states.

No other injuries were reported. Firefighters said it appeared that the house was vacant.

Firefighters arrived at the fully engulfed house two minutes after receiving the call at 5:48 a.m. They remained on the scene until about 7:21 a.m.

The main fire was at a single-family house. Fire officials estimate the loss at $22,000. There was some damage to the garage of a neighbor’s house.

“Something like this reminds us how dangerous the jobs firefighters do,” Mayor Doug Franklin said. “Although these firefighters decided not to go to get immediate medical attention, we will make sure they are seen.”
