Wed. 10:34 a.m.: Jury visiting scene of Hoerig murder

WARREN — A jury of 10 men and two women are at 64 W. Ninth St., Newton Falls, at this hour to visit the scene of the March 2007 murder of Maj. Karl Hoerig.

Opening arguments in the murder trial of his then-wife, Claudia Hoerig, are set to begin in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court this morning after the jury returns.

The trial is expected to last until Jan. 24 or Jan. 25, according to Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Becker. It is being heard by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Andrew D. Logan.

Nearly 20 witnesses, mostly for the state, are expected to be called. Most of the witnesses are officials connected to the investigation.

It is unclear if Hoerig herself will testify, although she often has sent handwritten court filings from her cell in the Trumbull County Jail, where she has been since Jan. 18, 2018, when she was extradited from Brazil.

Hoerig, 54, is facing life in prison.

The state has five elements to prove — that Hoerig committed murder purposefully, that it was done with prior calculation, that someone died, that a firearm was used and that it happened in Trumbull County, Becker said.

Karl Hoerig was 43 when he was shot and killed in March 2007 in the couple’s Newton Falls home. Claudia Hoerig left the country for Brazil, where she is from, shortly after he was killed.
