Tues. 8 p.m.: Zoning changes pass in Lordstown

LORDSTOWN – All seven of the zoning referendums needed for TJX Companies to build a $170 million, 1.2-million-square-foot HomeGoods distribution center in the village have passed, according to unofficial results from the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

In June, village council voted 3-2 to change all seven parcels, totaling 290 acres, from residential to industrial. The property is located on Ellsworth Bailey Road near Hallock Young Road.

Opponents of the zone changes, who called themselves Lordstown Concerned Residents, gathered enough signatures in July to have the zoning issues placed as a referendum on today’s special election ballot. They said they supported the distribution center, but did not believe the property was the right one and wanted TJX to build the center on other property already zoned industrial.

The construction project is expected to cost an estimated $170 million and over a five-year period create more than 1,000 jobs in Lordstown.

The distribution center is expected to generate an additional $600,000 in annual income and property taxes.
