Mon. 9:55 a.m. UPDATE: Hydrochloric acid spill caused evacuation in Weathersfield / Girard

UPDATE:

WEATHERSFIELD — Emergency responders say that hydrochloric acid spilled from a truck at Predator Trucking Co. this morning, causing the evacuation of a one-mile radius.

Not only are homes and businesses being evacuated, but emergency crews say that planes and helicopters are being instructed to stay clear of the area.

The evacuation includes everything north of the company at 1775 N. State St., Weathersfield, to Tibbetts Wick Road and east of U.S. Route 422 off Tibbetts Wick Road.

The Niles Community Services Center is being used as an evacuation point.

At 7:22 a.m., a passerby reported smoke coming from the rear of the Predator Trucking building. Twelve minutes later, firefighters said it actually was a chemical release. Firefighters donned air packs and called in help to both contain the chemicals and to evacuate the area.
