Wed. 1:15 p.m.: UPDATE – Sen. Portman aboard train that crashed this morning

U.S. Senator Rob Portman, R-OH, has released a statement confirming he was aboard the chartered train carrying dozens of GOP lawmakers that crashed this morning near Charlottesville, Va.

The train had been headed to a Republican retreat in West Virginia when it struck a garbage truck, lawmakers said.

Portman has released the following statement:

“Jane and I were on the train this morning traveling to the House and Senate Republican Member retreat. We are both fine. We are keeping those who were injured in our prayers and are grateful for the first responders who quickly arrived on the scene.”

It is not believed any of the lawmakers were hurt, but reports have indicated at least one person who was in the truck has died.
