VIENNA – A woman and five small children escaped injuries when their northbound van lost control on a snowy curve on Niles Vienna Road this morning, crashing on to the banks of an icy Girard Lake.

Vienna police Lt. Brian Darbey said, “The woman was pretty lucky,” because the van did not submerge into the icy water, and no one was injured. He said he sent them home to “get warm.”

Police identified the woman as Michelle Campo, 28, of Burghill. In the van two 6-year-old children, a 5-year-old child, a 2-year-old child and a 1-year-old child, according to police.

Crews with the fire department and a private wrecking company pulled the van from the shallow end of lake before 9:45 a.m. today.

Darby said passers-by helped the woman and children out of the van.
