Sat. 1:45 p.m.: Local scouts involved in crash that kills leader
GUSTAVUS – Longtime scout master Jim Potjunas of Vienna was killed this morning in a single-car accident on State Route 11 while transporting Scouts to Canada for a two-week trip.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was not releasing the name of the deceased, but Warren attorney Ned Gold Jr., a member of the Boy Scouts’ Great Trail Council executive board, said Potjunas was killed.
“I’ve never known a more dedicated scoutmaster,” Gold said of Potjunas, Boy Scout Troop 101 scoutmaster for 37 years.
According to Sgt. Michael Wilson of the patrol, Potjunas was traveling north on State Route 11 north of State Route 87 around 7:15 a.m. today with six passengers in a 1999 SUV when a tire blew out and he lost control of the vehicle, which overturned in the median.
The six passengers suffered only minor injuries, Wilson said. Potjunas was wearing his seatbelt.
