Sun. 10:19 p.m.: 15th year of profiles of local veterans begins Monday
COMING MONDAY: Allen Ryan of Champion said joining the Air Force at the age of 17 changed the course of his life.
“It was the best thing I ever did. My life would not be what it is today without my time in the military,” Ryan, 72, said.
“I was a terrible student and I didn’t want to go to college. Of course, my parents couldn’t afford it anyway. But I was on my way to working at a gas station for the rest of my life when I decided to join the Air Force. My dad had to sign for me because I was not yet 18.”
Ryan’s story begins another year of profiles of local veterans, which have been published on Mondays from Memorial Day to Veterans Day in the Tribune Chronicle since 2003. The story of 1962 Leavittsburg High School graduate Allen Ryan begins the 15th year of profiles.
