Sun. 10:14 p.m.: Hearing to resume for death row inmate

COMING MONDAY: Testimony is expected to continue Friday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court on the hearing to decide whether death row inmate Andre Williams in constitutionally eligible to be executed.

Expected to testify this week are three lay witness for the defense, who are all inmates at Chillicothe Correctional Institution, where Williams is presently incarcerated, according to Judge W. Wyatt McKay.

Williams, 49, was sentenced to death for the Feb. 17, 1989, beating death of George Melnick, 65, of Warren, and the beating, blinding and attempted rape of Melnick’s wife, Katherine. He has lost a series of appeals in an effort to get off death row.
