Wed. 12:44 p.m.: UPDATE – Names not being released in Howland police shooting

HOWLAND – The names of the two township police officers involved in a fatal shooting Tuesday night outside the Giant Eagle are not being released.

Darlene St. George, township administrator, would not identify the officers involved; however, she said they are on paid leave indefinitely, per township policy. She said the officers can take as much time off as they need.

Police responded to the area near the grocery store at about 9 p.m. last night for a call of shots being fired. A man was shot and later died at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, according to a spokeswoman with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification, which is leading the investigation.

A 9 mm handgun was recovered at the scene, according to BCI, which is an arm of the Ohio Attorney General office.

It is unclear if the shooting is connected to a fatal shooting about two hours earlier in the 3500 block of state Route 46 in Weathersfield. Neither BCI nor St. George would confirm a connection.
