Wed. 9:25 pm: Newton Falls woman frantic during 911 call after shooting

NEWTON FALLS – A sobbing and frantic Tammy Szesze called police dispatchers at 12:37 a.m. Saturday, begging for them to send someone to the Newton Village Apartments because her boyfriend, Howard Smith, had just shot himself while they were lying in bed.

Newton Falls Police Chief Gene Fixler released the 911 recording of Szesze’s dispatch call Tuesday evening. Fixler is expected to submit all of the evidence collected about the case to Trumbull County prosecutors Friday.

Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Humphrey Germaniuk ruled the shooting accidental after an autopsy on Tuesday. The coroner’s office ruled Smith died of a single gunshot wound to the head, and a coroner’s spokeswoman said the wound was not “self-inflicted.”

However, on the tape, Szesze said otherwise.
