Wed. 9:30 p.mNiles approves 3-year contract with teachers’ union

NILES – The Niles Board of Education has approved a new three-year contract with the district’s teachers’ union that includes pay increases in each of the three years.

School Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen said at Wednesday’s board meeting the contract with the 173-member Niles Education Association includes a 2 percent pay increase the first year, and a 1.5 percent increase in the second and third years of the agreement.

The contract is effective Sept. 1, 2016, to Aug. 31, 2019.

The base starting salary for a teacher will be $30,100 with the first year of the contract. Thigpen said as part of the contract, teachers agreed to a half-hour longer work day starting next school year.
