Thurs. 9:30 p.m.: Niles fiscal plan approved after income tax passage

NILES – Two days after Niles voters overwhelmingly approved the passage of a 0.5 income tax increase to bolster the citys general fund and help pay for safety forces, the Niles Financial Planning and Supervision Commission approved Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia’s amended fiscal recovery plan.

On Tuesday, Niles voters approved the increase, which is expected to bring in an estimated $1 million in additional funds for the remainder of 2016 and an estimated $2 million annually in future years.

Commission member John Davis on Thursday pushed for the city to find ways to bring back “as soon as possible” police officers and firefighters that were laid off because of the city’s financial woes. Six safety force employees – three police officers and three firefighters – and six other employees were pink-slipped in January.
