Thurs. 8:25 p.m.: Engineer’s critic placed on leave

CORTLAND A union steward with the Trumbull County Engineer’s Department, who once tried to have his boss removed from office through legal action, was placed on paid administrative leave Thursday for an alleged inflammatory comment he made to a supervisor prior to Thursday’s work shift.

Kendall L. Stauffer Jr. was escorted by county sheriff deputies from the Engineer’s Cortland office off state Route 5 shortly before 3 p.m.

Herb W. Laukhart Jr., director of finance and personnel for Engineer Randy Smith, confirmed the details of the incident, saying Stauffer would be suspended until an investigation is concluded. According to Laukhart, Stauffer was conversing with another worker a few minutes before 7 a.m., and his supervisor asked him to repeat the statement and he did.

Both Laukhart and Smith referred further comments on the matter to staff attorney Matthew Blair.
