Tues. 8:10 p.m.: O’Brien and Ryan upbeat about Cuba trip

YOUNGSTOWN – State Rep. Sean OBrien and U.S. Rep. Timothy J. Ryan will arrive in Cuba Wednesday, along with a delegation of local business leaders who are researching economic opportunities there for Ohio.

The Oct. 14 to 18 trip will include meetings and site visits in and around Havana, all with the theme of foreign investment and development as tensions ease between Cuba and the United States. Ryan, D-Howland, said he knew of a group from Pittsburgh visiting Cuba in a month, but otherwise, he and O’Brien are early in leading a delegation.

As Cuba develops its economy, O’Brien, D-Bazetta, said he wants Ohio to be one of the first to invest there once the long-standing embargo between them and the United States is lifted.

“When you look at Cuba, you can take 1959 and freeze it,” O’Brien said. “The benefits that they need — infrastructure development, technology — are all things Ohio businesses can do.”
