Sun. 10:30 p.m.: UAW members prepare for possible strike

LORDSTOWN – As a midnight deadline for a possible strike draws closer local United Auto Workers union representatives said they are prepared to advise members to walk off their jobs “if necessary.”

Contract talks between General Motors Co. and the UAW remain ongoing. The union told GM on Saturday that it would terminate its contract at midnight, creating the potential for a strike.

UAW members, including those who work at the GM Assembly Plant in Lordstown, have continued working under an extended contract set to expire at 11:59 p.m. today.

“We are prepared to do whatever the international tells us to do, whether there is an extension or they call a strike,” said Glenn Johnson, UAW Local 1112 president. His said the local union has all the resources on board “to follow the direction of the international.”

Liksewise, Rob Morales, president, UAW Local 1714, said his membership also “will follow the direction we are given by the international.”

He said a meeting with members was planned tonight and they are being advised what to do if a strike is called.
