Mon. 8:31 p.m.: Niles Health Department merged into county

NILES – The City of Niles announced today that the city’s health department merger with the county health department is complete.

All services by the Niles Health Department will no longer operate out of city hall but will be continued through Trumbull County Health Department. Mayor Ralph Infante said the department’s files will stay on site at city hall for reference whenever needed but the office will no longer be staffed.

The outsourcing of the city’s health department was one of the parts of Infante’s fiscal plan to rescue Niles from debt. Niles will realize $131,000 in savings in 2015 and $262,000 per year going forward.

Dr. James Enyeart, health commissioner for Trumbull County Health Department, said Niles employed four full-time employees. One of the workers retired and was not replaced, two positions will transition to the county health department to assist with the extra workload and the last position stays with the city.
