Wed, 11:02 a.m.: Former funeral home director gets three years
WARREN — A former Niles funeral home director was sentenced today to three years in prison.
Robert P. McDermott, 51, of Niles, was sentenced by Trumbull County Common Pleas Court judge Ronald Rice after pleading guilty last month to stealing more than $250,000 in prepaid funeral money from his customers. He pleaded guilty to 10 of the original 19 felony charges filed against him in exchange for dismissal of the others.
Once he completes his prison time, he will be placed on five years probation that will monitor a restitution order of at least $500 a month towards a total of more than $170,000.
McDermott was in court with his attorney, Mike Scala, and apologized to more than two dozen former clients and customers, some of whom delivered their own personal impact statements in court explaining how they were out varying amounts for their prepaid funeral arrangements.
The prosecutor, Charles Morrow, recommended the three year sentence.
