Fri., 11 pm: Diocese to close school in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — St. Joseph and Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Austintown will close at the end of the current school year, according to a letter sent home to parents Friday.

The Catholic school is the latest in local parochial schools to close its doors. St. Stephen School in Niles is also closing its doors at the end of the school year.

A letter was distributed Friday to students for parents noting that due to low enrollment and financial limitations that St. Joseph and Immaculate Heart of Mary would close with the last day of classes on June 5.

“Given the limitation of finances and low enrollment, we had to face the reality that the numbers needed to operate the school are not there … the reality is that the school cannot remain financially viable at this time,” the letter states.

The letter said that parents who enroll their children at other Lumen Christi schools will receive a scholarship.
