Fri., 11:28am: Warren police chief fires officer

WARREN — As expected, and almost 10 months after placing him on paid administrative leave, city police Chief Eric Merkel has fired a veteran city patrolman accused of ethics violations and professional misconduct.

In a letter dated May 1, Merkel informed Reuben Shaw that he was terminated, effective immediately.

Shaw, who started with the city police department in 1989, is accused of illegally having a vehicle towed from private property on June 30, 2013, and towed to a garage he controls.

He has also been the focus of a criminal probe by the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation. That case was handed over to the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office in March and is still pending.

Complete coverage will appear in Saturday’s print and electronic editions.
