Tue., 9:18 pm: Teen sentenced in break-in, beating in Niles
WARREN – A Niles teen was sentenced to 13 years behind bars Tuesday after pleading guilty to a series of charges in a December home invasion in which a woman was beaten and robbed.
Anthony A. Howe, of 2122 Robbins Ave. and with an address in Girard, said nothing as Judge Andrew Logan delivered the sentence that included three years for a firearm specification, eight years for felonious assault and concurrent 10-year sentences for aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and kidnapping.
Howe admitted to breaking into the North Butler Street home of 65-year-old Linda Spano, who pulled a gun on Howe and tried to fire it.
The gun jammed and Howe severely beat Spano, fracturing a bone in her face that required hospitalization.
Howe, who smashed in a back door window to get in, stole the gun, ammunition, a television and a cell phone as Spano ran to a neighbor’s home to call police after the early morning invasion Dec. 30.
