Mon., 6:30 pm: Former coach Jim Tressel makes cut for YSU president
Former Youngstown State and Ohio State universities football coach Jim Tressel has made it into the final three for YSU’s next president.
The narrowed list of candidates, released this afternoon by YSU, are Mary Cullinan, president and professor of English at Southern Oregon University; Gary L. Miller, chancellor of University of North Carolina Wilmington; and James P. Tressel, executive vice president for Student Success at University of Akron.
Tressel is also one of three final applicants for the position of president at UA.
While Miller and Cullinan both hold doctorate’s in their respective fields, Tressel’s lack of a Ph.D. does not disqualify him as a candidate, said YSU Board of Trustees chair Dr. Sudershan Garg, who said requirements such as that are a thing of the past.
“Nowadays we look at traditional and non-traditional candidates,” he said, adding that there were three such candidates in the original pool of 33.
