Mon., 8:46 pm: Howland speller dethrones Bee champ

LEAVITTSBURG — Howland Middle School student Elias Kondolios, 13, took first place at the annual Tribune Chronicle Spelling Bee tonight in the LaBrae High School auditorium.

Kondolios out-spelled two-year champion Rebekah Stanhope, 14, of Joseph Badger Middle School, in the 35th round of the bee with his final word of “Croesus,” after Stanhope slipped on “pizzicato.” He will be heading to the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee held May in Washington D.C.
