Fri., 9:42am: Warren substitute teacher in custody

WARREN — A substitute gym teacher accused of assaulting a student at the Willard K-8 school earlier this week turned himself in to city police this morning.

Police confirmed that John Jerome, 63, no address available, is due to be arraigned on an assault charge today.

Police and school officials said Jerome inappropriately “spanked or paddled” an 8-year-old boy and that the boy suffered an apparent minor injury. A 7-year-old girl was also listed on a police report as a victim but her injuries are unknown.

Warren City Schools Superintendent Michael Notar said Jerome was a day-by-day substitute, but not a permanent one for the district. He was dismissed and is not permitted to teach at any of the district’s buildings, Notar said.
