Wed., 5:30 pm: Tech problems cancel Cirque’s opening night
YOUNGSTOWN The old adage says “the show must go on,” but not when the show is as technically dependent as Cirque du Soleil’s “Varekai” and not when one of its main pieces of equipment isn’t working.
Cirque was forced to cancel Wednesday’s opening performance of “Varekai” at the Covelli Centre.
Tour publicist Vanessa Napoli said the center winch, which is integral to many of the aerial elements in the production was not working properly.
“We don’t want to put on less than a stellar show,” Napoli said.
She did not expect the problem to affect any of the remaining six performances.
“It’s going to get fixed,” she said. “We just need more time.”
Kelsey Rupert, director of marketing and sales for the Covelli Centre, said ticket holders who want to exchange their Wednesday tickets for another performance should come to the arena box office, which will be open until 8 p.m. today to help customers making exchanges and will open at 10 a.m. Thursday.
“We’ll do our best to accommodate anyone who wants to come to another performance,” Rupert said.
Refunds will be available at the point of purchase.
