Tue., 8:36am: Other OH cities back Toledo in traffic camera case

CINCINNATI – Other Ohio cities that use traffic cameras are lining up to back Toledo’s case before the Ohio Supreme Court.

Columbus, Cleveland, Dayton and East Cleveland all are part of legal briefs filed in recent days supporting camera enforcement. An appeals court ruled last year in favor of a motorist ticketed in Toledo. His lawsuit contends Toledo usurped municipal court jurisdiction and violates motorists’ rights by giving them limited ability to contest camera citations.

Ohio’s high court agreed last month to hear Toledo’s appeal. Ohio’s Supreme Court upheld speeding cameras in a 2008 Akron case, and traffic cameras had withstood other court challenges in the state.

But last year, besides the appeals ruling against Toledo, a Hamilton County judge ordered a stop to speeding cameras in a Cincinnati area village.
