Mon. 11:23 a.m.: Indictments unsealed in two funeral home cases

WARREN – Indictments against three local men accused of misappropriating funds paid to two Trumbull County funeral homes through prepaid funeral plans were unsealed this morning in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Robert McDermott of McDermott Funeral Home in Niles and Robert and Patrick McClurkin of McClurkin Funeral Home in Girard were arraigned on a combined 49 felony charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.

Bond was set for all three at $100,000 each.

The secret indictments handed down last week came after a lengthy investigations. Prosecutors said the an investigation by the Niles police department showed there was $150,000 in missing prepaid funeral money from the Robert McDermott Funeral Home. Girard police then investigated MrClurkin Funeral Home and found there was $500,000 in missing prepaid funeral money.

The Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Ohio Department of Insurance also participated in the investigation.

Both funeral homes were closed by the Ohio Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers.
